About the Library

The SPHSU Library is a unique resource combining the collections from MRC's Obstetric Medicine Research Unit (University of Aberdeen) and Medical Sociology Unit (University of Aberdeen and then University of Glasgow) and CSO's Social Paediatric and Obstetric Research Unit and Public Health Research Unit (University of Glasgow).

MRC Libraries and other Library Networks

The SPHSU Library is part of the MRC Library Network and its wider counterpart Research Council Library and Information Consortium (RESCOLINC). In Scotland it is part of the Scottish Health Information Network (SHINE), and the inter-library loan network for Health Libraries.

Opening hours

The library is open to visitors and telephone enquiries between 1000-1600 every day, when the Librarian is present. Visits can be made by external users, ONLY with prior notification, to use our collection as a reference. We are not in a position to allow borrowing of texts, but a limited photocopying service is available if required. If you would like to visit the library please contact the librarian.

Resources

The Collection 

The topics covered are diverse and include Medical Sociology, Epidemiology, Statistics and Research Methods, Evaluation, Psychology, the Family and Gender studies, Ethnicity, Sexual health, Health and Social Policy.

The Library collection includes Books, Reports and Grey Literature, Journals and Theses.

Obtaining papers & reprints

Abstracts of papers are available for most papers (2000 to date) through the Pubmed link below each publication link listing on our publications database. A current e-journal subscription will be required to access the full text or pdf reprints through the Pubmed link provided (Athens password maybe also be required).

Where available a free open access link to the full text e-print version of a journal article has been provided for those without a journal subscription.

If you are unable to access a reprint of an article through the links provided or through your own library loans service the unit librarian may be able to provide you with a reprint.

Additional Working Paper reports have also been produced by the unit, these are not publicly available. If you would like to receive a copy of a Working Paper please contact the librarian.
