Education:
BA Philosophy and Politics, Corpus Christi College, Oxford.
MSc Methods and Applications of Social Research, University of Wales at Cardiff.
MSc Quantitative Methods in the Behavioural Sciences, London.
Geoff joined the unit in 1995 having previously held posts in the MRC Social Psychiatry Unit at the Institute of Psychiatry and in the South Glamorgan Health Authority. He began his research career working on a survey of children's accidents in Cardiff. From there he went on to work on the Cardiff and Camberwell psychiatric case registers. Whilst at the Institute of Psychiatry he also worked on the Present State Examination (PSE) and was involved in the development of the 10th edition of the PSE - the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN). He was for several years a member of the WHO steering committee for SCAN and helped co-ordinate the international field trials.
His current research interests concern the material and psychosocial correlates of health, with a particular interest in the role of income. He spends a significant proportion of his time working on the West of Scotland Twenty-07 study, often with external collaborators.
Geoff is a long-time, and enthusiastic, user of SAS software and is currently the MRC technical representative for the Windows version of SAS.
