Biography and Interests
Nicola graduated with a First Class Honours BSc in Sociology and Psychology in 2008, and a PG Cert in Public Health Studies in 2010, both from Queen Margaret University. She then completed an MSc in Social Science Research in 2011, at the University of Glasgow. Prior to joining the unit she worked in the voluntary sector as a counselor, and in other support roles. Nicola has also worked at the unit as a fieldworker on the Gay Men’s Health survey.
Nicola joined the Sexual Health, and Children, Young People, Families and Health teams in 2010, on a 1+3 PhD studentship to explore gay men’s understanding of the ‘gay community’, their perceptions and interpretations of community norms around safer sex and condom use, and the impact of these on their sexual health and behaviour. Her MSc dissertation was a qualitative study exploring gay and bisexual men’s use of the gay scene (bars, clubs, saunas etc) in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Nicola is jointly supervised by Dr. Lisa McDaid and Dr. Katie Buston.
